It is an interesting notion that raising the price of alcohol would deter teens from using it. However I think they would quickly find alternatives for it such as theft or raiding mom and dads liquor cabinet. Some thing needs to be done about underage drinking as well as over consumption. Does the raise in price of cigarets due to taxes have a big change in how many people purchase them? I just am reminded of prohibition and how well that worked. Interesting blog post, curious to see what pans out with this.

Thank you for your interesting post and great to have you on board as a guest blogger. I can see that being a patient has been a very enlightening experience for you. Maybe we should make a stint in the waiting room part of all medical school training.

I would like my doctors to have a woman doctor. They did have one but she got pregnant and went on maternity leave and never cam back. I really miss being able to go and talk to a her about my female problems and feel embaressed talking to the men doctors about such personal stuff. My daughter recently went on the pilll and she feels awkward going to them for her prescriptions.

The clamelle test is the only pack I know of which is suitable for both male and female testing. Most other tests are for women only. The sample is posted to a UK lab for testing, so you get all the convenience of a home test with all the accuracy of a lab result. You do have to wait a few days to get the result by telephone from the lab using a secure pin number included in the pack

These anaemia test are also used by professional in clinics and community setings for an immediate Hb blood level if they suspect anaemia and cant wait for a lab test. The accuracy is very close to a lab test. It is an ideal bit of kit to have in a GP surgery for a nurse to perform as a screen, especially out of hours or late evenings when a blood test may have to wait 18-24 hrs to be completed by a hospital lab.

blood type tests are not available on request from your GP, the only other way to get to know your blood type is to donate blood and get a doner card.

A good basic start and well written for a pre-med student covering this diverse and complex subject. Some generalisations are made, and there are many forms of both radio-therapy, radio isotope therapy and chemo, all specific to tumour cell types and with a wide variety of risk and side effects, but well done. A good starting point for further research.

Saw this really good interview via Twitter by Dr Marilyn Glenville on Ireland Am yesterday about 'Fat around the middle ' which increases your risk factors for CHD
Here is the link
http://www.tv3.ie/ireland_am.php?video=45888&locID=1.65.74

Really worth watching the intervew if you or a loved one has 'fat around your middle' . Gives great explanations as to why we carry our fat this way, how it affects our health and things you can do to reduce it and why weighing ourselves may not be the best way to improve our health. Get you tape measures at the ready you may be surprised at what you find out.
Dr Glenville has just published a very helpful & informative book on the subject.
